Mars has fascinated humanity for centuries, but the closer we look, the more intriguing it becomes. In this talk, Mark will explore the geology, atmosphere, and extraordinary landscape of our nearest planetary neighbour; from the Solar System’s tallest volcano to its vast canyon system that dwarfs anything on Earth. He will also look at what the latest rovers and orbiters have revealed about Mars’s watery past, what that means for the possibility of ancient life, and why the Red Planet sits at the centre of humanity’s ambitions for future exploration.

Our talks are generally family-friendly, any exceptions will be clearly stated in the event description above. The observatory will be open for you to look around from 7.00 pm on the night of the talk. You will have a chance to view the night sky if the weather cooperates, before or after the talk.
We serve refreshments (tea, coffee, hot chocolate, squash) on site for very reasonable costs.
We have limited parking at the observatory itself, so provided you don’t have mobility issues, you may be required to park at our overflow parking at Seething Aerodrome, about 200 m further down Toad Lane.
