SUMMARY:The Southern Skies with Frank Dutton [PUBLIC]
DESCRIPTION:Frank Dutton will share his experience observing the night skies from the Southern hemisphere\, revealing features we never see from the Northern hemisphere \nFranks talk is based on two recent trips he made to New Zealand and the images of some of the beautiful deep sky objects in the Southern skies taken using a 52mm short focal length refractor with a wide angle CCD camera and the SeeStar 50 an extremely portable smart telescope. The weather was not always cooperative on either trip as the South Island has similar weather conditions to the  UK. \nAlong with the images Frank will also introduce how the Southern Hemisphere night skies were charted by both Western and Asian & Polynesian travellers and observers from before and after the telescope was first used as this is key to an understanding those skies.  \nFrank has lived in Japan\, China and Australia and travelled extensively in Australasia\, during that time he became fascinated with the Asian\, Polynesian and Aboriginal perception of their skies. \nThe observatory will be open for visitors and if the skies are clear there will be telescopes to look through. \n  \nNOTE: Members will be expected to prove thier membership at check-in. \nAll tickets are non-refundable

DESCRIPTION:Part of the BAA Radio Astronomy group talk series. \nThis talk will be in the Cabin via Zoom \nDr Katharine Mulrey Associate professor – Astrophysics  (Radboud University\, the Netherlands).\n\nCosmic rays have been observed for over a century\, and yet the sources of the highest energy particles still remain a mystery. We can detect these cosmic rays\, and the associated high energy neutrinos\, through the particle cascades they initiate when they interact in the atmosphere or the earth. In this talk\, I will present an overview of modern efforts to measure these cascades using the radio signals they generate\, in particular\, using radio telescopes like LOFAR and the SKA.

DESCRIPTION:Colleagues\, \nThe BAA Radion Astronomy group\, of which I am a member are starting thier Friday evening talks with :- \nDr Timo Laitinen University of Central Lancashire  \nSolar Energetic Particles\, Solar Eruptions\, Space Weather \nAreas of interest and expertise: Solar Energetic Particles\, Solar Eruptions\, Space Weather \nTimo has been a post-doctoral research associate at the Jeremiah Horrocks Institute (JHI) in UCLan since 2010\, and is a member of the JHI’s solar physics research group. Previously\, he worked as a University Lecturer in Turku\, Finland\, and he has worked as a post-doctoral researcher in Finland and Germany. He works on the modelling of energetic particle transport in the heliosphere\, has experience in energetic particle observations\, and is involved in space-borne missions.

DESCRIPTION:Treehouse Fesitival is from 17th to 23rd August on a farm in Matishal (about half way between Dereham and Norwich) \nThey have asked if we could run a Star gazing evening during the week. \nChris Greenfield is the lead on this activity and will sort out actual date when we can predict the weather (so nearer the time) \nBrandon House Farm\,\nBrandon Parva\,\nNorwich\,\nNorfolk\nNR9 4DJ\nUK \nBy car: \nIf you can find Mattishall\, you’re almost there. The village of Mattishall is just off the A47\, about 10 miles out of Norwich\, and is signposted at the exit you’ll need. Once you’re in Mattishall\, you need to take the turning by the Church (or by the chip shop\, depending on your worldview) going south (this is left coming from Norwich). Keep on going until you come to a T junction\, turn right and it’s the first place on the left!  You’re there! \n
