DESCRIPTION:The Norwich Astronomical Society will be supporting the 100 hours of Astronomy event scheduled for 2nd to 5th October 2024 organised by the International Astronomy Union (IAU) see 100 Hours Under One Sky \nThe Observatory will be open from 6:00 pm till 10:00 pm free of charge. \nWe will be demonstrating the 100 hours challenges. \nIf the skies are clear and dark\, we will point out the challenges in the night sky \nIf we have enough volunteers we will open the domes up for visitors to visit and see through (assuming clear skies) \nWe will aim to have the cabin open for refreshments (not free of charge) \nThe challenges are aimed for ages between 5 and 12\, but anyone can take part.

DESCRIPTION:This meeting is ONLY for members of the Norwich Astronomical Society. \nFear and Loathing in the Heavens \nHow the 1910 Return of Halley’s Comet (Almost) Destroyed Civilization \nIn 1705\, Edmond Halley liberated humanity from the belief that comets were portents of doom; two centuries later\, when Halley’s Comet returned to its perihelion\, newspapers\, misguided theorists\, and shameless con men managed to reignite that fear. When astronomers announced that the earth would pass through the comet’s tail\, opportunists exploited human anxiety—often with fatal consequences. \nJoin Dr. Richard J. Goodrich\, author of Comet Madness: How the 1910 Return of Halley’s Comet (almost) Destroyed Civilization\, for an entertaining lecture about the comet’s 1910 return and the reasons that many believed the earth would not survive this deadly encounter. \nBio: \nRichard J. Goodrich (Ph.D.\, University of St Andrews) is an author and historian. After twenty years as a history professor in Britain and the United States\, Richard resigned his teaching post to pursue a full-time writing career.
