SUMMARY:Rob Tate: The Good the Bad and the Ugly - The Astrophysics of Sci-Fi Movies [Members]
DESCRIPTION:From galaxy-wide space travel to hopping backwards and forwards in time\, Sci-Fi movies love to push the boundaries of science and often blur the fanciful with the possible. In this light-hearted look at the genre\, Rob Tate will look at some of the most iconic movies and address the science behind them\, looking for not just the good and the bad but also the downright ugly. \nThis talk is targeted at a family audience\, so whether you’re an Elliot Taylor or an Obi-wan-kenobi there should be something for everyone.

SUMMARY:Paul Brocklehurst: Mapping The Heavens [Members]
DESCRIPTION:How do we make mental\, physical & virtual maps of the night sky? Throughout history\, people have pictured the heavens from various perspectives using evolving technologies to capture its secrets. Paul Brocklehurst’s talk will look at those efforts\, starting in the Stone Age up until the Space Age.

SUMMARY:Rob Tate: Einstein For Dummies [Members]
DESCRIPTION:It is now well over a century since Einstein turned the world of Physics upside down.  His insights into the true nature of space and time\, along with his work laying some of the foundations of what was to become Quantum Mechanics are arguably the biggest contribution to science by a single individual\, ever.\n\nCome with Rob Tate as he takes you on a journey from a falling apple in the garden of a farmhouse in Lincolnshire to the detection of the collision of black holes on the other side of our galaxy. Whilst the youngest may find some of the talk difficult to follow it is targeted at all that have a fascination with how the universe works and will leave you hungry to find out more.

SUMMARY:Exploration of icy moons: Past\, present\, and future - MEMBERS ONLY
DESCRIPTION:Nicole Sutherland of Natural History Museum. \nOverview:\nSome of the most promising targets for life beyond Earth are the ice-covered oceans on moons around Jupiter and Saturn. I will cover the history and future of icy world exploration\, their habitability\, and my own research into extreme conditions chemistry and its implications for our understanding of icy moons.\nPersonal Bio/introduction\nI am a PhD student based at the Natural History Museum London and University College London. Previously\, I completed my undergraduate studies in Physics at Durham University\, with a focus on Materials Science and Astrophysics. Now\, I combine these disciplines to study the unique materials that form under the extreme conditions of alien worlds. In particular\, I investigate novel salt hydrates that form under high pressures and low temperatures relevant to icy moons such as Ganymede\, Europa\, and Callisto.\n\nI’m looking forward to introducing everyone to icy worlds and the work that I do to probe their interior chemistry! Let me know if you need anything else.
